Welcome to Cedar Class – Year 1

Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope that you have all enjoyed a restful break and are ready for the new year.

We have lots of exciting learning planned for this term.  In English we will be looking at the story of Little Red Riding Hood and then writing our own version of the story.  We will look back at Toys from the past.  If you have any toys or photos of toys in the past you would like to share, please let us know.  We are hoping to create a Toy Museum in school that we will invite visitors to – further details to follow…  In History we will continue to learn more about our local area, Felixstowe and significant events that happened in the past.

In Maths we will continue with place value, addition and subtraction within 20 as well as length, height, capacity and mass.  We will continue to practise writing numbers with the correct formation (it’s sometimes tricky to get a 2 and a 5 the right way round)

PE will continue to be on a Monday morning with Mr Entwistle and Friday afternoon with myself, so please make sure that your child has a named PE kit in school.  We will also continue to have music lessons with Miss Dalton on a Monday morning and visit the art studio with Mrs Carr for our weekly Art lesson.

It is important that children read regularly at home, as well as in school.  The children can collect certificates that are presented in assembly for 25, 50 and 100 reads.  In Year 1 the children will complete a phonics screening check during June 2024.  Reading regularly and completing the weekly phonics videos that are sent home each week, will increase their confidence and  support your children’s progress.
